At Villa View Global our roots are firmly planted in the Pacific Northwest. We cut our teeth reviewing properties in Cannon Beach, where the view is defined by the rugged silhouette of Haystack Rock and the misty, crashing waves of the Pacific. For us, a great view has always been about looking out — at the horizon, at the weather, at the raw power of nature.
But travel has a way of shifting your perspective. When we traded our fleece jackets for linen shirts and headed to Indonesia, we discovered that the idea of a view in the tropics is entirely different. In Bali, and specifically in the fashionable enclave of Seminyak, the best views are not always of the ocean. They are often the ones created within the walls of a luxury estate.
Beachfront Is Not the Same as Beachside
If you are planning a trip to the Island of the Gods, you might assume you need to be right on the water. Coming from Oregon, where "oceanfront" means a quiet cabin on a cliff, Bali was a shock. In Seminyak the beachfront is public, bustling and loud. It is the domain of beach clubs, sunset crowds and vendors.
This is where many first-time visitors make a mistake. They book a property right on the sand expecting solitude, only to find they have zero privacy — reading a book by the pool while a stream of tourists walks a few feet away. The seasoned Bali traveller knows a secret: the best experience is rarely on the beach. It is beachside. A beachside location means you are a five-minute walk from the ocean but insulated from the humidity, the salt spray and the noise.
The View Is Constructed for You
So if you are not staring at the ocean, what are you looking at? This is where Balinese architecture shines. A high-end estate is designed to be an internal paradise. When the heavy wooden gates close behind you, the outside world ceases to exist. The property becomes a series of pavilions wrapped around a glittering swimming pool, framed by towering palms and frangipani trees dropping white blossoms onto the grass.
For us, used to the expansive grey horizons of Cannon Beach, this was a revelation. The view here is colourful, vibrant and intimate — a micro-view. You find yourself staring at the intricate stone carvings on a temple shrine in the corner of the garden, or the way the light filters through the canopy. It is a view that lowers your blood pressure instantly.
Walkable Seclusion
One of the main reasons we love this style of stay is the lifestyle. Traffic in Bali can be notorious, so being able to walk is the ultimate luxury. A strategically located property puts Jalan Laksmana — Eat Street — a short stroll away, along with morning coffee, boutiques and the beach for a sundowner. Many rentals that claim to be in Seminyak are actually miles away in the rice paddies, requiring a scooter or taxi for every errand. Choosing a property in the heart of the action but hidden from it gives you a level of independence that transforms the holiday.
Architecture That Breathes
In the Pacific Northwest our architecture is defensive; we build to keep the rain and cold out. In the tropics the architecture is permeable — it breathes. The living areas are open-air, with no walls separating the lounge from the pool. You can sit on a plush sofa watching a film while the warm night breeze drifts through the pavilion. Bedrooms stay enclosed and air-conditioned, but often feature semi-outdoor bathrooms. Showering under the open sky, surrounded by high privacy walls and tropical plants, is a signature experience of a luxury Seminyak villa.
The Pool Is the Centre of Gravity
At Villa View Global we usually judge a property by its windows. In Bali we judge it by its pool. Because the ocean here can be rough and is often better for surfing than swimming, the pool becomes the heart of the trip. You want a serious pool — one you can actually swim laps in, not a token plunge pool. It is where you have breakfast, where you read in the afternoon shade and where you have cocktails before dinner. Framed by timber decks and thatched roofs, that water is the quintessential tropical view we travelled halfway around the world to find.
A Fully Staffed Experience
Finally, a view is only as good as the experience that accompanies it. In Cannon Beach we are used to self-catering beach houses — you pick up the key from a lockbox and you are on your own. Bali operates on a completely different level. A proper estate comes fully staffed with a villa manager, chefs, butlers and housekeeping who handle reservations, transport and the housekeeping, often invisibly. The view of your morning coffee is improved considerably when you did not have to make it yourself.
Our Verdict
We will always love the dramatic, sweeping vistas of the Oregon coast. But there is a different kind of beauty in the enclosed, manicured paradise of a Balinese estate. If you are looking for the ultimate tropical escape, do not get hung up on being beachfront. The smart money is on the beachside sanctuary. A private Seminyak beach villa such as the Villa Kinaree Estate — tucked in the Golden Triangle behind the Oberoi — offers the best of both worlds: a short walk to the waves when you want them, and a breathtaking private view of your own jungle when you don't. It is a perspective shift we highly recommend.
